Bio

Sephora Schembri (b.1997) is a masters graduate in architecture. Coming from a background in conservation studies, she has a keen interest in local raw materials and traditional practices. Her practice involves working with natural materials together with local traditional techniques as a way of deepening her roots to her homeland, Malta, whilst keeping the knowledge alive. Weaving as her main current practice has brought her to work with natural fibres such as sheep wool and cotton. The sheep wool is sourced locally right after the sheep are sheared before it is discarded away which is then hand-washed, sun-dried and hand spun, ready to be weaved. Her work was recently recognised by the Malta Crafts Foundation through the award Premju Ġieħ l-Artiġjanat Malti - Student Maker of the Year. In 2023, she was also recognised for her work in printmaking intertwined with the art of weaving at the Malta School of Art in collaboration with Azgenzija Zghazagh as part of IdeArti II, where she was chosen as the winner and awarded a scholarship at the Salzburg Summer Academy of Fine Arts.
